WHAT ARE SPORTS INJURIES?

Sports injuries are injuries that occur when engaging in sports or exercise.

Sports injuries can occur due to overtraining, poor training practices, improper equipment, lack of conditioning, or insufficient warm-up and stretching.

A sports injury can also be caused by an accident or an impact.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON SPORTS INJURIES?

Bruises, muscle sprains, tears of the ligaments and tendons, dislocated joints, fractured bones, and head injuries can result from sports injuries.

Acute injuries happen suddenly, such as sprain-strain ankles.

Chronic injuries happen after you play a sport or exercise for a long time.

Overuse injuries are caused by repetitive trauma.

Strains are by far the most common of all sports-related injuries simply because we use so many muscles and tendons when we exercise or play. These moving parts are all susceptible to stretching farther than they should or moving in ways they shouldn’t move, leaving them torn, damaged, and in pain.

We can classify most sports into three main categories.

Sprains are injuries to a ligament caused by tearing of the fibers of the ligament. The ligament can have a partial tear, or it can be completely torn apart. Ankle sprains are the most common type of sprain. Wrist, knee, and thumb sprains are also common.

Shoulder injuries: cover a large number of sports injuries from dislocations, misalignment, strains on muscles, and sprains of ligaments. As well as avulsion fracture and torn ligaments. This can cause, pain, inflammation, limitation of movements, and weakness.

Elbow Injuries: due to repetitive action the tendon of the elbow can become inflamed and make any wrist or hand motions extremely painful.
Hip Injuries: Sports injuries to the hip muscle can be caused by sprinting, running inclines, and activities with quick turns, sudden starts and falls, and impacts.
Knee Injuries: can cause instability when walking, running, or turning corners, it can increase swelling in the knee and restrict motion during gait.

Leg injuries: pain in the lower leg bone, or the tibia, the most common injury is Shin splints which cause intermittent sharp or dull pain. Also, the hamstring muscle (located on the back of the thigh) is a common injury in the leg.

Sciatica causes back pain that also travels down the back of the leg or even to the feet. This radiating pain can additionally be associated with numbness, burning, and tingling down the leg.

WHEN DO I NEED TO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR FOR A SPORT INJURY?

You need to see a chiropractor if you are suffering from the following:

  • Consistent pain during or after sports
  • Persistent or new swelling around a joint
  • Recurrent instability  (weak muscles no longer hold the bones of the joint in proper place)
  • Painful Crepitus (painful popping joint)
  • Pain that does not respond to a period of rest
  • Consistent swelling around a joint
  • Inability to move the joint or decreased motion of the joint
  • Any bony deformity
  • Inability to walk without a limp
  • Extensive bruising
